Canadian Tire partnered with The MacLaren Group to roll out Fujitsu self-checkout (SCO) systems, aiming to enhance customer experience and streamline operations across its stores. Recognizing the need for a robust, adaptable training program, The MacLaren Group went beyond simple button-pushing instructions. Our hands-on, bilingual training incorporated realistic simulations, enabling associates and managers to handle real-life scenarios confidently.

This approach was essential to avoid common pitfalls associated with SCO. To meet the needs of diverse store layouts, we tailored our training to support both cash-recycling and non-cash-recycling self-checkout setups, ensuring seamless implementation and consistent service quality across locations

The Business Need

Canadian Tire recognized the need for a comprehensive and inclusive training program for their new self-checkout implementation. This program had to focus on the new guidelines for cash handling, reconciliation, and upkeep, and also include an in-depth review of the technical operation of the new machines.

Challenged with the objective to smoothly integrate the new self-checkouts into current business operations, reducing theft and operational issues, Canadian Tire engaged The MacLaren Group. The MacLaren Group designed a tailored training strategy to meet the unique needs of each store, ensuring a smooth go-live and ongoing support. This approach streamlined operations, facilitated staff transitions, and provided continuous training for new store openings and role changes. The program was also created to support the various regions that required bilingual teaching and training programs.

Custom Training Materials

We developed training materials tailored to Canadian Tire’s policies, procedures, and standards. These resources included job aids, leader guides, coach guides, and role-specific exercises, all designed for use in training sessions.

On-Site Training

We organized bilingual (English and French) store-level workshops, where store managers and employees participated in immersive 2- to 3-day sessions. Each session included practical exercises like cash handling, balancing procedures, and machine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning and clearing jams. The training also featured role-based scenarios, allowing store personnel to practice real-life situations and become familiar with the new self-checkout machines.

The Results

The training program set Canadian Tire up for long-term success. Employees are well-prepared to operate the Fujitsu self-checkouts, handle cash transactions accurately, maintain the machines, and integrate the new systems into their daily routines. As a result, Canadian Tire experienced a smooth transition to the self-checkout systems, with reduced operational issues and increased confidence among staff.
